In the night of 4/22/21, I heard the words to an old song as happens sometimes. These words were ‘the writing’s on the wall’. In the morning, after getting grandchildren to school and writing down those words, it was time to get into peaceful devotions and prayers. What a blessed time.

After searching for the words that had the right tune, the song is actually called Connected. It was the first single from the British group Stereo MC’s. The lyrics go on to say ‘somethin’ ain’t right’ and ‘stumble you might fall’.

Afterwards, laundry started, housework going so I could get into the office. Ear plugs in and Joanie Stahl’s Field Notes playing. In the first five minutes she was talking about the writing’s on the wall that Daniel speaks of. Her focus was on how the queen knew of Daniel and to call on him. She spoke of a life of peace and the narrow way.

When you hear certain words in the night and wake up to hearing someone else speaking those words, you know to listen because the Spirit is speaking to His church.

Daniel 5 tells us that King Belshazzar was partying with nobles, wives, and concubines while drinking out of gold and silver goblets that his father, Nebuchadnezzar, had taken from the temple in Jerusalem. They praised the gods of these earthly things. Suddenly, a hand appeared and began writing on the wall. The king was very frightened and called on astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. He made promises of gifts to anyone that could read the writing but no one could.

The queen came into the room and told them of the man in the kingdom that had the ‘spirit of the holy gods’. In Nebuchadnezzar’s day this man had light, understanding, and wisdom ‘like the wisdom of the gods’ and was made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. She was speaking of Daniel that the king had called Belteshazzar.

Daniel was brought in. He told the king to keep his gifts but that he would interpret. It goes on to tell the story of what happened to Nebuchadnezzar because of his heart lifting up and his mind hardening in pride. Belshazzar knowing all this had not humbled his own heart but had lifted himself up against the Lord of heaven and praised other gods. Daniel let him know that the God that holds his breath in his hand had written on this wall.

The writing was Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.

Mene; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.

Tekel; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

Peres; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. (Peres is the singular form of upharsin.)

Daniel was clothed in scarlet and a chain of gold placed around his neck. A proclamation was made concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. In that night Belshazzar was slain, and Darius, the Median, took the kingdom.

Pride comes before a fall and God is the judge; repentance of sin could have saved these kings and kingdoms a whole lot of trouble. The kings and kingdoms of today would do well to pay attention to the writing on the wall.

I don’t watch the news but others tell me things and it is obvious we are in the throws of spiritual warfare. I had a dream a few years ago where someone stepped in front of me and said ‘have you ever seen us more at war with God’. That is what we are seeing, war against God and His people. We don’t focus on what is out there because we have God, His Spiritual weapons, His Word, and prayer. That is our focus. God gives more dreams and visions of protection than warnings, and all warnings come with promise of protection. He only warns to draw us closer under His wing and give instruction. It brings peace just knowing how it all plays out. God bless!
